3rd Unified Marathon by Special Olympics Pakistan held at DHA Sports Club (Moin Khan Academy)

A grand unified marathon event was organized by Special Olympics Pakistan with support of DHA Karachi in which people of all ages, genders and abilities participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. A brief colourful ceremony was held at the start the event at DHA Sports Club (Moin Khan Academy) which presented a scene of activity and gaiety.

Special Olympics Pakistan, an organization which is transforming and empowering lives of people with Intellectual Disabilities, organized the exciting event with great fanfare. Around 800 athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) alongwith 2500 people of the community participated in the event, running side by side. The race categories of the event included 800 M Children’s Dash, 5 Km fun Run, 10 Km Competitive Race and Half Marathon. The aim of the event was to create awareness about people with disabilities in people and to open up venues for their inclusion in society by making people run together despite differences.

The entire marathon route was decorated with colourful banners, standees and steamers inscribed with different slogans. DHA provided all logistics and administrative support to make the event a success. People chose to either walk, run or complete the event on wheel chair demonstrating extra-ordinary perseverance and courage which was reassuring.

Administrator DHA Brig Shahid Hassan Ali said that DHA accords utmost priority to ‘Service to the Humanity’ as its community oriented mission. He reiterated that DHA will wholeheartedly support and promote initiatives meant for the wellbeing and betterment of society as its social corporate responsibility. Chairperson Special Olympic Pakistan, Ms Ronak Lakhani said that the unified marathon helped in giving renewed confidence and self assurance to the people with ID through the power of sports. She added that the event gave the special people a renewed experience of courage, honour and hope in life.
