Book Launch: Being Pakistani by Raza Rumi at T2F

The Second Floor invites you to the launch of Raza Rumi’s new book, “Being Pakistani”!

Being Pakistani:
Society Culture & The Arts brings together a mosaic of varied essays on arts, literature and heritage of Pakistan and South Asia written over the last decade. These essays explore common threads of rich, contested religious and cultural identities of South Asians. From the songs of Kabir to the ballads of Bulleh Shah to the cult of the feminine in the region, Rumi takes a kaleidoscopic view of cultural mores that tie the two countries and their peoples together despite the bitter acrimonies. Focused on Pakistan, this book illustrates the rich literary traditions of the country in visual arts, poetry and music that are a continuation of its shared but disrupted past. The underlying theme is that local, folk cultures are much more resistant than what the architects of modern singular nationalisms assume. For readers interested in Pakistani culture and society, this collection presents an alternative view of Pakistan than what is reported in the mainstream media beyond the usual headlines of political instability and terrorism.
