Constitutional Framework for Parliamentary Elections’18 at T2F

The upcoming parliamentary elections to be held on 25th July 2018 will mark the second consecutive democratic transition of power in the history of Pakistan. While some say this is a welcome sign of democracy finally taking root in Pakistan, there are growing concerns that certain state institutions have overstepped their authority to influence the electoral results in favor of those political parties that are considered ‘pro-establishment’.

Pakistani society is divided amongst those who welcome the recent disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and court judgments against senior members of his party; and others who consider this to be equivalent to a ‘judicial coup’. The Second Floor invites you to participate in a civilized and objective discussion to understand what the constitutional framework for the upcoming elections in Pakistan presently is, and what it should be in an ideal democracy.

The Panel will consist of:

  1. Anis Haroon – National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) & Women’s Action Forum (WAF)
  2. Salahuddin Ahmad – Karachi Bar Association (KBA)
  3. Haider Imam Rizvi – Karachi Bar Association (KBA)
  4. Sara Malkani – Women Lawyers’ Association (WLA)
  5. Asad Iqbal Butt – Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP)
