Discourse on Public Art by T2F

Bringing art into public through street art, monuments and moving art.

What is public art? Is it an artwork displayed in a public space? What is the difference between art and craft, is every artwork considered as public art? Be a part of this interesting discussion amongst artists who have been involved in creating and crafting at public spaces.

About the Speakers

R.M Naeem graduated in Fine Arts from National College of Arts, Lahore. Naeem is part of the permanent faculty since 1994 at NCA and in 2019 became Associate of NCA.
He has held 18 solo shows both in Pakistan and abroad and curated various important shows of local and international artists. He also participated in The Asian Art Biennale Dhaka Bangladesh and, The International Artists Biennale Iran, The Pyeongtack International Art Festival Lake Museum Korea, Art Expo Malaysia, Slick Art Fair Paris France, and various other exhibitions. He represented Pakistan in New York at “New Pathways, Contemporary Art from Pakistan” curated by Tanzara Art Gallery, organized by Pakistan Embassy, United Nations. R.M. Naeem’s work has garnered several scholarships, awards and prizes in Pakistan, including the Provincial Best Painter Award 1991 and 1992.

Mazhar Hussain graduated in Communication Design. NCA. 1990 B.A (Hons.) Graphic Design. University of Humberside. Hull. Specialism in Animation. UK. 1993 Worked in London, Sweden and Pakistan. 25 Years of experience: From Channel 4, British Film Institute UK to leading advertising agencies in Pakistan and Stockholm Taught at NCA qnd BNU, photography, Communication Design. Now head of Graphic Design at Institute for Arts and Culture, Lahore.

Munawar Ali Syed is a multidisciplinary artist who teaches as Associate professor at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. Munawar’s work has been shown in various major national and international platforms along with seven solo presentations and several group shows. Munawar’s works was also included in notable publications. He has participated in several national and international artist residency programs. Munawar’s new ventures integrate artworks and the ideas of artist into a variety of public settings and sited in spaces accessible to the general public. He initiated a public art group in 2011 ‘Rung dey Karachi’ during the period of turbulence and violence in Karachi. Also, Syed has curated four shows and project in public galleries. Recently he has received ADA National Award 2018/19 for categories of performance and sight specific work. Munawar got public choice award of Sovereign Asian Art Prize- 2019.

Wajid Ali Daharkiwala completed his MA (Hons.)Visual Art in 2010 from National College of Arts Lahore , BFA with honors in 2004 from The Department of Visual Studies, University of Karachi. He was the key member of the project W11 – Karachi to Melbourne Project for the Commonwealth games 2006 in Melbourne, Australia. He was also production coordinator for project The Great Wall of Pakistani Truck Art at New Islamabad International Airport Islamabad. Since 2006 He work with various Premium institutes of Pakistan (Department of Visual Studies, Karachi University, PIFD – Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design Lahore and NCA – National College of Arts Lahore). Currently he has been teaching at The Department of Fine Arts, School of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Gujrat as Assistant Professor and the founding head of Department.

About the Moderator

Nadeem ul Hasan is an architect who has explored the bounds of creativity as a director, puppeteer, writer and lyricist. He is one of those Pakistani architects who are working internationally and has received the ‘World Architecture Award’ twice. He is the founder of ‘The puppeteers NCA’ and has written more than 100 skits and numerous plays for both theatre and television. He has penned some famous songs, including the all-time favorite national song ‘Aye Jawan’ by the band Awaz. Nadeem’s upcoming book ‘LOL FOL’ is of Urdu satire and humor in the fiction genre; extracts from the book are already gaining critical acclaim in literary circles.
