A huge blast near the Qayyumabad flyover near Defence shook the locality, Express News reported. The blast was powerful enough to shake buildings and windows as far as Defence Phase IV. No damage to life was reported.
Initial reports said that the blast was the result of a gas buildup near a pipeline in a sewer. Korangi Road was badly jammed with traffic after the explosion. Police and Bomb Disposal Squad personnel have reached the site for further investigation.
A suspicious person has been detained by police from the site. A Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) sub station’s roof, fencing and records were damaged in the explosion. DC South said the investigation into the incidence is still underway.
An SSGC spokesperson said the blast was similar in nature to the one that occurred at NIPA a few days ago.
