Inauguration of DHA Karachi Book Fair and Literary Seminar – 22nd Anniversary of Defence Central Library
Three days DHA Book Fair kicked off at Defence Central Library (DCL) located at Sunset Boulevard, DHA Phase-II on Thursday evening. The Book Fair is part of 22nd Anniversary Function of DCL and is being held from 20-22 Feb, 2014 and is open from 10 am to 9 pm on a daily basis for general public.
Administrator DHA Brig Muhammad Abdullah inaugurated the Book Fair by cutting the ribbon in a colourful ceremony held at DCL’s Lawns on Thursday Evening. Speaking on the occasion he said that Book Fairs help in promoting reading habits in society. He said that reading of books enriches human experience, develop one’s vision and brings a change in life.
He commended the role of Defence Central Library which is providing conducive reading and learning environment to the public. Leading publishers/booksellers of the metropolis have setup their stalls at the Book Fair where quality books on different subjects of interest at highly rebated prices have been put up on display.
Later a literary Seminar on “Library Culture Promotes Positive Trends in Society” was held at DCL’s auditorium in which intellectuals, scholars and educationists highlighted the significance and role of libraries in creating a progressive, enlightened and civilized society.
Mr Javed Jabbar said that libraries were repository of knowledge and wisdom and helped in building a progressive and enlightened nation. He lamented the intellectual crisis faced by Pakistan and pointed out towards the declining trend of reading books and newspapers in society. He said that it was imperative to have a network of public libraries in every city if we wished to develop as a civilized, cultured and progressive nation.
Dr Peerzada Qasim said that reading should be for pleasure, understanding and learning and not as a compulsion. He said that libraries were lifeline of the nation and played a catalyst role in making a dynamic and powerful nation.
Dr Abdul Wahab said that libraries were strong pillars of a growing nation which empower it intellectually, economically and spiritually in all its ramifications. He highlighted the significance of reading books for developing a versatile, dynamic and powerful nation.
Dr Alya Imam said that DCL was one of the shinning examples of repository of knowledge which was playing a significant role in promotion of knowledge in society. She stressed the need for establishing a network of modern public libraries in the country for the progress of nation.
Earlier Secretary DCL Lt. Col (R) Rafat Naqvi in his welcome address highlighted the significance of libraries in promoting positive trends in society.
