Maa Dharti Project: Chapter 4 Kachrey ka Khazana

Garbage CAN, but can you?

The metropolis of Karachi currently generates around 12,000 tonnes of garbage daily, a figure that is expected to increase to 16,000 tonnes by 2020. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Could there be treasure hidden among the garbage if we only learn how to find it? In the Fourth Chapter of the Maa Dharti Project at The Second Floor, Ahmad Shabbar (GarbageCAN) uncovers the hidden secrets of garbage and its potential in the 21st century.

Ahmad Shabbar received his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Reed College and a second bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Energy Engineering from the University of North Texas. While studying physics he trained and worked at the Reed Research Reactor and became a licensed Senior Reactor Operator, and the youngest Pakistani to work a nuclear reactor. While studying engineering, he also worked on a project with NASA to remove CO2 from the airstream. He returned to Pakistan 2 years ago and founded ‘GarbageCAN! Sustainable Waste Management’, a social entrepreneurship that focuses on sustainable practices including recycling and overall waste management. His goal is “to provide a homegrown solution to the waste management issue in Pakistan”; and his mission is “to make recycling a norm in every province, city, business, organization, school, and home in the country.”
