Maa Dharti Project: Chapter 6 at T2F

Maa Dharti Project
Chapter 6: Mangrove Blessings

Mangrove forests are an irreplaceable component of the ecosystem. They are important in maintaining and building the soil; they provide protection against cyclones and play a significant role in coastal stabilization and promoting land accretion, fixation of mud banks, dissipation of winds, tidal and wave energy. Besides this they are a natural habitat for large number of insects, microorganisms, birds, mammals and reptiles; and act as physical breeding grounds and nurseries for fish, shrimp and crabs.

In Pakistan mangroves are still being cut down mercilessly for developmental activities near urban areas. Reduced water flow in the River Indus is also causing damage to mangrove forest and the ecosystem they support.
In the 6th Chapter of the Maa Dharti Project, ecologist Mr Nadeem Mirbahar will educate us on the importance and present state of mangrove forests in Pakistan today.

Mr Nadeem Mirbahar has more than 17 years experience in planning, management and conservation of natural, wild resources, and biological diversity. He holds two Master degrees, one in Environmental Biology and another in Sociology, as well as a postgraduate diploma from School of Environment, Resources, and Development (SERD), Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand; and is currently doing MPhil in Marine Science, University of Karachi. He is currently associated with Switzerland based South Pole Carbon Group as Senior Forestry and Climate Change Expert and has also worked with EU-UNDP, IUCN, WWF-Pakistan, Pakistan Navy, MoCC, PFI, SAVE, MFF, SFD, SWD, GoS, BF&WD, BCDA and national and local NGOs.
