How do TV channels make money?
Why is the news so sensational?
Why do the headlines feature Bollywood music?
In Pakistan, despite news and entertainment shows being of widespread interest to the public, consumers do not pay directly for content via subscriptions. With content being given away for free, or at a nominal price, news outlets rely on advertising for their income. As a result, content has to attract and maintain the interest of a defined target audience likely to appeal to advertisers. How do these financial dynamics affect what we end up watching on TV and how are the preferences of the defined target audience measured?
Join The Second Floor (T2F) for a panel discussion on the current business model for TV in Pakistan and how content is shaped.
Conversations with industry leaders will explore how channels make money, how the rating system works, and how the advertising model influences content. Our panelists for the inaugural session of the Mind Your Media project include Afia Salam, Bilal Lakhani, Farhan Qureshi, and Mazhar Abbas.
Mind Your Media is a project of the Pakistan Coalition for Ethical Journalism and PeaceNiche. The initiative’s debate and lecture series will bring together decision makers at top news organisations, journalists and activists to explore the ethical challenges faced by the news media in Pakistan.
