My Tribute to Ustad Abid Hussain; A Tabla Performance by Leena

A classical solo Tabla recital by Leena Ahmed

She will be playing traditional repertoire from the Dilli gharana, demonstrating peshkaar, qaidas, relas, gats and tukras, etc. She will also be playing her piano/tabla compositions. Leena dedicates this performance to her late ustad, Ustad Abid Hussain (Aug 14 1934–May 30 2018), legendary tabla player and one of the most sought-after accompanists of Pakistan.

About the Performer:
Leena Ahmed
has the honour of being the first formally trained female tabla player of Pakistan, having received training from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, India in 2008 under the guidance of legendary Ustad Faiyaz Khan of the Dilli Gharana and with the celebrated tabla maestro Ustad Abid Hussain of Pakistan.

She recently performed at the SalamFest in Melbourne, Australia (30th Nov, 1st Dec. 2019) where she performed solo tabla and accompanied Renaud Gay (alghoza, chang and didgideroo). In Sydney, she also played with aboriginal didgideroo player Mariwa. She has been representing Pakistan in Bahrain at various cultural events including opening act at the Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad Qawwali in 2019. In 2018, she performed at the Diwali festival, Bahrain, alongside other Indian instrumentalists.

She performed at the APMC, Karachi in 2010. In 2009, she collaborated with the string quartet Cultures in Harmony from USA performing for TCF schools in Karachi. She has accompanied Indian sitarist Sarwar Hussain, Polish pianist Beata Just, Dutch Jazz saxophonist Ben van den Dungen & pianist Juraj Stanik, Russian guitarist A. Savin, and others.

Leena is a pianist, composer and artist with a degree in architecture. She explored Taal patterns in a series of paintings. She also fused electronic sounds with traditional rhythms for sonic artworks based on bus conductor chants of Karachi (in collaboration with Ian Fletcher), exhibiting at the Transmediale Festival, Berlin 2009, the Art Dubai MENASA Studio Dispatches, 2011, and the Rising Tide Exhibition, Mohatta Palace Museum, 2010.
