Nishana - An Artist’s Interpretation of Digital War Game Maps by Sabina Haque

Karachi, the city of lights, is now target practice in an Xbox game called Modern Warfare. The Karachi war game map is devoid of life and vitality, it is simply a target, a mark on the earth, a nishan …

Join The Second Floor (T2F) for an evening with artist, Sabina Zeba Haque, who will present a digital slideshow of Nishana, her latest series of artworks.

Sabina’s new work incorporates elements of appropriated video game imagery, Indo-Persian miniature patterns and western oil painting into allegorical maps. Her pieces allude to omnipresent satellite surveillance and references drone operators who are situated on the other side of the world. Sabina attempts to reconcile these two very disparate experiences: the virtual drone’s eye view and her lived experience growing up in Karachi.

About the Artist

Sabina Zeba Haque, now based out of the US, was raised in Karachi by her American mother and Pakistani father. She completed her MFA in Painting from Boston University in 1998 and now teaches Fine Arts at Portland State University. Her work has been exhibited in many prestigious art galleries throughout the US, in which she connects personal experiences of living ‘between’ cultures and explores the creative potential of the many places she calls home. Sabina’s upcoming solo exhibit will be held at Koel Gallery in Karachi in 2013.
