'Pakistan Calling' - Film Screenings and Conversation with Anwar Akhtar and Durriya Kazi

Join The Second Floor (T2F) for an evening of film screenings and conversation with Anwar Akhtar, Director of The Samosa and Durriya Kazi who heads the Department of Visual Studies at Karachi University.

Pakistan Calling, a project of the RSA and The Samosa, is a platform that uses the medium of film to increase awareness and support for Pakistani civil society organisations and activists working to tackle the country’s pressing social problems. It aims to profile some of the many cultures and communities of Pakistan, and support young filmmakers working in areas such as the arts, social welfare and citizen journalism. The films are used to generate a different discourse and raise awareness of those tackling tough social problems in Pakistan and how the British Pakistani community, and wider social and economic networks, can support this work.

Anwar Akhtar heads The Samosa, a culture and news website with a focus on South Asia, Britain, the Pakistani diaspora and the politics of identity and human rights. He also helped set up the UK-based Pakistan Calling film project. Born in Manchester, to Pakistani parents, Anwar graduated in social studies from Sheffield Hallam University and was a fellow on the Clore leadership programme. He was previously Director of RichMix, an arts and cultural centre in East London and is an associate of Urbed, a cooperative working across urban design, regeneration, sustainability and community involvement.

Anwar Akhtar and Durriya Kazi will screen selected films from the Pakistan Calling portfolio and will talk about the aims of the initiative, the response in Britain, and the next stage of the project.
