An Extraordinary General Body Meeting of Defence Society Residents’ Association (DSRA), was held at a local hotel. The meeting was chaired by its President, Honorable Justice (R) Saiduzzaman Siddiqui, former Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Large number of residents of DHA participated in the meeting. Besides, the Residents of DHA , prominent amongst those who also attended the meeting were Dr. Arif Alvi, member of National Assembly of Pakistan (MNA) and member of the Committee recently constituted by the Prime Minister of Pakistan to recommend appropriate amendments in the Cantonment Act to rationalize its working and make it more democratic and under civilian control, and Architect Samar Ali Khan MPA elected to the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, from DHA and Clifton Constituencies.
The participants of the EOGBM took serious exceptions to unilateral increase in water charges, and increase in other fees and charges by the DHA listed on the website of DHA. The participants unanimously expressed the view that such increases should have preceded the consultative process with the stake holders (the residents of the area) according to the universally accepted norms.
The Chair apprised the participants about the meaningful discussion in a conducive and cordial atmosphere held with the Corps Commander of Karachi, on 8-10-2013 by the CEC Members led by the President on the issues faced by the Residents, and a follow up meeting with the DHA Administrator. The Chair also informed the participants about the impending meeting on the issues discussed in the EOGBM with the DHA Administrator, which is likely to take place soon after Eid holidays.
Urgent need for democratic reforms in the Cantonment Act as well the DHA Karachi also came under discussion during the EOGBM. It was proposed that DHA residents should continue to pursue all peaceful and legal means available to them to bring about democratic reforms in their area.
The EOGBM unanimously adopted a resolution to create a separate Legal Aid Fund to safeguard and protect the legitimate rights of the resident of DHA and to contribute a sum of Rs 100 every month to meet the necessary expenses in this regard. The meeting authorized the President and the CEC Members to take such steps/actions as they may consider necessary to protect the rights of the residents of DHA after the proposed meeting is held with the Administrator DHA.
