Science Ka Adda – Omar Vandal on Tools for Disease Eradication

Join The Second Floor (T2F) for a Science Ka Adda session featuring Omar Vandal who will talk about enabling eradication of two of the greatest killers in human history.

Eradication is the reduction of an infectious disease’s prevalence in the global host population to zero. It is a story of one species working towards the complete elimination of another. To date, smallpox is the only human disease that has been eradicated — which the World Health Embassy declared officially eradicated in 1980.

In Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the eradication of polio is currently being attempted. However, successful elimination of a disease depends on the availability of a variety of technologies which collectively enable a global eradication program. There are also unique biological features of organisms that make their potential eradication more or less likely. We will discuss positioning for eradication of two of the greatest killers in human history; malaria and tuberculosis, how these diseases fight back, and the development of innovative new tools and technologies that will enable eradication from a research perspective.
