About the Speakers:

Ustad Muhammad Hanif started his career in music under the guidance of Pandit Chandan Das and Ustad Parvez Paras. He also learned Dhrupad Music from Ustad Hafeez Khan, the spearhead of Taalwandi Gharana. His flute recital thus contains the amalgamation of Dhrupad and Khayal along with strong emphasis upon expression of emotional content employing volume control and ‘meendh.’ He has been performing professionally as a flutist since 1998 and has performed at national platforms such as PTV, APMC Lahore and APMC Karachi, LMF, Al-Khayal Music Society and many others along with representing classical music internationally. His recent ventures include performances at online platforms like Takiya Online, Artists United and Sarb Akal. Apart from being at stage pretty often he is currently teaching music at LUMS University and LGS.

Yousuf Kerai hails from Karachi, Pakistan and was introduced to South Asian Music at the age of eight where he learned to sing, and play the harmonium, under the tutelage of the late Master Babu Khan. Through this, his interest in the tabla grew into an obsession. At the age of sixteen, he was accepted as a student of the great maestro, Ustad Khursheed Hussain. Yousuf has been a student of tabla for the last 20 years, even though he has spent eight of those years in the U.S.A. for the sake of higher education. Earning a B.A. in Mathematics and a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics from Bennington College, Yousuf has taught at various institutions in USA and Pakistan in the capacity of a mathematics teacher and teacher trainer. He currently serves as Mathematics Lecturer and Founding Director of the Centre for South Asian Music at Habib University.
