The Enigma of Suicide – A Talk by Dr. Murad Khan at The Second Floor (T2F)

Dr. Murad Moosa KhanJoin The Second Floor (T2F) for a session with Dr. Murad Khan as philosophy and science come together in a discussion about the enigma of suicide.

Suicide is a major global public health problem with an estimated one million deaths worldwide (approximately 6000-8000 in Pakistan) every year. It is one of the most personal yet complex acts anyone can perform, as it goes to the very core of the concept of human existence and the meaning of life. Suicide cuts across all national, ethnic, religious and social boundaries, though there are variations in rates and methods used between and within different societies, cultures and religions.

Traditionally, suicides were rare in Islamic countries but have shown a worrying and dramatic rise in recent years. Although the vast majority of suicides are preventable, there are formidable challenges in preventing premature and needless deaths.

Dr. Murad Moosa Khan was born and educated in Karachi, attending DJ Science and Dow Medical Colleges, before training as a psychiatrist at Kings College London. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and has a PhD in suicide epidemiology from the University of London, UK. At present, he is Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry at the Aga Khan University. His clinical and research interests include suicide and attempted suicide, mental health of women, and medical ethics. He serves on the Boards of several national and international mental health organisations.
