The Gharana Series – Ustad Khurshid Hussain presents the splendour of Purab Gharana at The Second Floor (T2F)
In the mid 18th century, the musicians of Delhi were forced to leave the courts of Delhi and moved eastward to Lucknow where music and dance were being performed and reformed at the same time. The pakhawaj was a bit too heavy a sound for the more nuanced musical styles evolving in the region and the newly arrived tabla players from Delhi found fertile grounds for adapting their playing to the demands of the emerging styles.
Hence, the Purab baaj was created, with techniques involving all five fingers, as opposed to the strictly two-finger techniques of Delhi. The compositions were also influenced by the tradition of Kathak dance that was thriving at the time.
Join The Second Floor (T2F) as Ustad Khurshid Hussain and his student, Yousuf Kerai, present the compositions of Purab Gharana. They will also demonstrate comparisons between the Delhi style and the Purab style of tabla playing.
