WordPlay: Sarnath Banerjee in Conversation with Mohammed Hanif at The Second Floor

Sarnath BanerjeeIndian graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee joins critically acclaimed author and journalist, Mohammed Hanif for an evening of banter about cities, graphic narratives, and sporting near-misses.

Sarnath Banerjee is a graphic novelist, artist, and film maker. His bold graphic works centre on universal themes, common experience and his Indian background and culture. Anecdotal and autobiographical in nature, his stories are imbued with humour and immediacy. Born in Calcutta in 1972, Sarnath lives and works in Delhi, India. After getting a degree in biochemistry, he received an MA in Images and Communication from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Sarnath’s first novel, Corridor, published by Penguin Books India in 2004, was commissioned as part of a fellowship awarded by the MacArthur Foundation, Chicago. His second novel, The Barn Owl’s Wondrous Capers, was published in 2007. His latest graphic novel, The Harappa Files, was published in 2011 by Harper Collins.

His works have been exhibited at various museums in India and internationally and he has won critical acclaim and awards for his films. Sarnath also co-founded Phantomville, a publishing house with an exclusive focus on graphic novels.

Sarnath’s latest work, Gallery Of Losers (Non-Performers, Almost-Winners, Under-Achievers, Almost-Made-Its), was a series of graphic illustrations presented across posters, billboards, local newspapers and hoardings throughout the Olympic boroughs in London. Banerjee’s humorous graphic narratives reference and draw on the shared history of competitive sport, from the personal to the universal, and the local to the international. The series taps into a collective consciousness of sporting near misses – or, the people who almost made it – and was created to resonate with local communities and visitors to the London 2012 games.
